Beehive Meeting Minutes 5.28.13

This is a meeting about LARGER ROLES and LONGTERM TASKS
First sunny day! Let’s have a meeting outside!
Everybody make it back from Montreal alive and intact? Everyone feeling good for nice weather? Check-in!
-Gordo is leaving in about a week for two weeks, will prioritize teaching distro to someone
-TK is leaving! for a month! :o
-Kbar had a dream about Gabfestry being inside a snake and being raided by NAACP senior citizen white allies
-Kyle is here!
SOPHIE and KALEIGH have started a google calendar to help us plan places we want to go in the near future. Right now it is mainly summer and one-off events but may also be helpful to start thinking about touring. Please make use of it, help fill it in, check it out. Can one of them post the link to it? I couldn’t find it!
A go-round about what experience we have/what roles we are interested in:
TK does design/posters for 8 years, for various groups,wants to continue doing that, on a short time basis, to connect us better to social movements, bring us $, wants to do more tactile drawing, will eventually need to get out of machias, wants to learn the narrative, wants to put in time doing the crappy shit jobs also, like answering the email (?), wants to learn InDesign and video editing
ETHAN has been working as an illustrator, knows indesign and print publication, also has experience doing network/communications stuff in activist world, experience doing distro and print coordination for WW3I, doesn't want to be stuck in front of a computer all day, would be happy to do a teach-in for interested bees on Palestine and the boycott movement ;)
ABSENT FRIENDS:
We need to check in with EMMA on her desires/roles/experiences
IGGY will be bottomlining bookkeeping with TYLER and MATT and also taking on transforming the Annex
MANDY came on to work on Mesoamerica Resiste (MR) and is our connex to Mexico, will be going back there end of June and Guatemala in the fall
LARA researched MR, liason with web/design and MR campaign, connection to campaign, will be at Gabfestry
KEHBEN is full up with holding top-level administrative stuff, trying to level-up the beehive and do it well, would love to run around 1st nations and create a series of posters about resource extraction, but can't dream of being available until fall, would be a big treat to tour outside the U.S. with MR, especially places whose currency is worth more than ours ;)
PAT and CHRIS can be called on for custom illo work
NICOLE has been doing drawing and some physical archive stuff, on a farm nearby, has a connection to Fortenberry education on native bees and wants to help us hook up with doing education in local schools around bees/pollinator stuff
ZOE is an illustrator, graphic design, computer and press person, is very good at organizational stuff with color-coded binders, would like to learn how to drive
KYLE has been involved in touring and going to events, wants to help coordinate that stuff, will do anything that needs to get done, is not a computer person, wants to connect to movements and to Machias
SOPHIE- has media experience, writing for radio, newspaper, literacy/editing, event planning as a collective, office organizational stuff, is not a presenter, wants to do some physical stuff, learn to drive stick, and letter press
KALEIGH has done environmental justice campaign work locally and internationally, blogging, working on translating policy, done some exciting stuff on story-based strategy in social movements, not a superdetail person but prefers big picture, is interested in workshop design, popular education, answering email, wants to learn more about photoshop
MEG: I draw somethings sometimes, web design/graphic design, excited about connected to Eagle Hill on scientific illustration, would like to learn flash, work on networking and emails, would like to be involved with illustration, has taken on food money cordination and website stuff, work on school education
GORDO- help out behind the scenes, loves creative problem solving, loves the town, community stuff, loved teaching about the poster, unsure of what his role is, drooling and excited about little kids and japanese yen, sharing the load of email responses
KATHERINE- is in touch with Matt? What is going on?
POPCORN THOUGHTS
-The email problem is exponential, PS, and is about to blossom into more as we launch a public kickstarter/fundraiser
-Illustrators had a system for custom illustration work but we need to talk more about that and evaluate a response system
-Lots of our roles have little random crumbs that need to be figured out
-How do we say NO?
-The more we do the easier it is to figure out what we don't do
-How do we deal with things coming from the external world?
-Managing burnout and the volume of tasks
- How can we use our core values to determine how to answer requests from the outside world?
-There is a tension between structure and flexibility
OK WE ARE GOING TO JUST GO THROUGH THE TASK LIST AND START PUTTING DOWN NAMES
-Let's hold these things lightly for now, there is still a lot of room to discuss, not everyone is here, and some things will shift around, but we want to get started

Volunteer/visitor coordinator: KALEIGH
Pollination:
Touring and Events Coordination- THIS IS A HOLE
Distro and Display - GORDO and TK and SOPHIE and ZOE can do it short term but this needs a full-time focus person to think about how we set up efficiently, how we can make kits for people to take, THIS IS A HOLE
General Correspondence- MEG and ETHAN and KALEIGH
Media+promotion (we've been reactive, would be good to be proactive): ETHAN and SOPHIE
Custom Graphics/Derivative Graphics- TK and MEG and ETHAN and EMMA and ZOE
