Printer Success!
The poster was birthed at the printer this week! It is so awesome! I can't wait for everyone to see it. So much work is shown in these prints. Its overwhelming and also super exciting to think about the next stage of this work's life- being out in the world, shakin the ground & watering seeds of change!
I wanted to show some of the pictures from this week. It was a much more satisfying week at the printer than last time, since we walked away with finalized posters in our hands. Woohoo!
This is the printer we print the poster on.
Ever wonder what CMYK stands for? Well, it's the 4 ink colors that create almost everything that we see on any given printed page. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. These 4 pictures show the incredibly detailed rolling mechanism that helps the inks to perfectly evenly roll onto each page.
Cyan
Yellow
Black
Magenta
This is the blue plate of the poster running. AH! So cool!
This is Mike looking through a magnifying glass to see if the registration of the CMYK plates are lined up on the print itself.
This is the view inside the magnifying glass. Success! They are all lined up! If they weren't you would see tiny dots of one of those colors peeking out from under the layered black dots we see here.
Mike lowering the sheets down for a test-run of folding/scoring.
Ethan, Ralph and the scoring master decide on methods of scoring the poster.
We had so many discussions about the levels of all the colors until it was PERFECT.
Is it perfect yet?
Another shot of one of the plates, ready to run.
Zoe examining the poster (or checking her phone...)
Holy moly! 11,00 posters have been printed!!!
Nicole, gazing at this poster, finally, finally completed.

you're invited to some weird local fun
hey y'all,
I won't be here, but next weekend Tracy would love to host anyone that's around to come enjoy the Lobster Boat Races, the Jonesport tradition...
http://www.great-maine-vacations.com/maine-lobster-boat-races.html
Usually the whole seaweed crew goes out in thier boats and ties together for a tailgate party. If anyone wants some silly-fun in a super beautiful setting, he really wants y'all to come out on the boats with them!

Meeting Minutes June 17th
Meeting with: Kayleigh, Kyle, Emma, Josh, Sophie, Meg, Zoe, Ethan, Kehben
Zoe taking notes - did my best to keep up!
FOUR PHYSICAL PROJECTS:
Kehben filling in the rest of the Bees
1. ANNEX
-Remove walls in basement/stop progression of mold
-Remove fire-escape from outside of building b/c pulling down wall
-These would be best for warm weather, don't require money for materials and need people power
2. FIVE AND TEN
-Clean out trash
-Seal up insulation so we aren't breathing fiberglass
-Re-do wiring
Considerations:
-Ok for colder weather
-Would like to have this space for Gabfestry
-Summer is a people power time, but we can probs gets lots of help from community w/this space so probably wouldn't need to bring in people from away
-If hiring anyone for wiring probably will be Tigger
3. QUIMBY GRANT ATTIC + KITCHEN WORK
-Will know August 1st if we got it
-$35,000 for materials for:
1) Finishing out attic into four bedrooms: three existing bedrooms, sewing space to a bedroom, could make it so the four rooms are lofted so we could fit seven in attic (we would want to do this work in September/October so the spaces are ready for people to stay for the winter)
2) Work on kitchen: would take wall out so that the mudroom becomes kitchen space (this can happen in winter/spring)
4. 101 COURT ROOF RESTORATION + PAINTING:
-Our insurance co: we are super on the level with and communicate w/really well esp. through Matt
-We pay a bunch for nice business insurance for all of our spaces
-Big move to kick older houses off of insurance, so there is a push on us to fix our roof esp. over barn + studio (roof over main part of house has a bit longer)
-Also want us to take flaky paint off house b/c probably has lead in it
-This would be a really good project w/a bunch of people, but visitors don't like doing this project
-Kehben wants to write a grant to pay a Machias local who really knows what they are doing to take care of it
-We need to continue to show progress in coming months
-Need to figure out where funds for these projects will come from
-This is the time of year the insurance company usually pushes b/c insurance renews July 1st, they can send letters demanding giant projects w/in one weeks time
WORK PARTIES
-One week at Annex
-One week at Five and Ten
-Kehben recommends ten people for a work party
-Has been some discussion of having one party be local folks and one party be folks from away
-Kehben - Five and Ten will draw lots of local interest and support, will be really wonderful to give local folks a sense of ownership
-Kehben - Annex will not get nearly as much interest from local folks, would be a much better project for folks from away
-Priority goes to Five and Ten space b/c we really need that space for Gabfestry
July 15th - 21st as potential work party week:
-This is the same week as launch for Kickstarter, which is totally pivotal to us, the attention we get in the first week/last days is the MOST important to meeting the Kickstarter goal
-Kehben - Would it be damaging for us to have our attentions torn b/n the launch and hosting visitors?
-Josh - Would it be helpful to have 10 more people here to digitally push the launch into the world?
-Kayleigh - They will also draw attention to Kickstarter as they go back to their own places after work party
-Kayleigh - Might make experience for our volunteers richer if they get to do physical work AND be involved in the work of the launch
-Kehben - might this work party be a good party for local folks? Then we don't have to host. -Also, it would be difficult to be teaching people how to launch as we launch
-The digital/physical divide: should we allow Bees to fall into two work realms or push back against this divide that has occurred a couple of times already? Emma - is this just naturally people's preferences?
-Kyle - can we check in and make sure that everyone is ok w/two weeks of upcoming summer months being devoted to work parties/visitors
-Group agrees this is alright
-Emma - thinks that local folks probably would be into volunteering for a day, but won't have the time available to volunteer for five days
-Maybe we just have a three day weekend festive work party at the Five and Ten for locals
-Ethan - we could also set it up that last weekends in July and first weekend in August are open for locals to come and help us get things done
-Josh likes this idea so we have time to reassess and decide how to move forward
July 29th - August 4th as potential volunteer week, proposed by Kayleigh:
-Kehben - if we do work party in first week in August folks might ask to stay for entire month of August through to Gabfestry/BFB
-FYI: Pat, Carl coming in August, other Bees from away will also be coming around this time
-Getting ready for ball and Gabfestry are real-world tasks that we've done before, also during this time we will want to be prepping things for touring
-SO if there are visitors who hang around for all of August there will be plenty of things for them to work on
-Josh likes idea of folks coming to 29-4 and then maybe staying for whole month of August
-Kehben - what do we need to make Five and Ten useable as meeting space for Gabfestry?
-Electricity - lights for a few days
-we can tarp off part of space
-Kehben - if we can crack into Five and Ten in July, and then use first week in August to crack into Annex, then if visitors stay for whole month of August we can get more work done at the Five and Ten
-Josh - taking down the fire escape at Five and Ten is a very straight forward project, would need to look at it more but don't think it would be a very difficult project
-Josh - what would be ideal:
-One week of locals in July for Five and Ten - get as much cleared out + cleaned up as possible, maybe July 8 - 14
-Note: money and materials - if we have $$ for drywall, studs, electrical and can throw it in, it makes things smoother than if we have to figure out where materials are coming from
-Also open to idea of Saturdays, each plan has its benefits:
-If its a solid week people will drop in when they can
-Kehben - a solid week would work better around here b/c locals spend weekends w/families and we will be going to events
-also having space open for a week would make it easy for locals to drop in and see the space
-Then we have three weeks to get space ready for Gabfestry, can asses during that time if Josh can do what's left w/ help from Kyle, Eric, folks in community, and then by first week in August if possible we move attention to Annex
-Kehben - don't' want to make assumptions but think Iggy will be stoked if he gets to focus on Five and Ten redo
-Meg - wants to clarify timeline for Earth First b/c think it would be good to have solid weekends of work time for Bees before and after locals work party
Final Plan
-It would be best to have locals work party July 15 - 21
-Away party will be July 29 - August 4
-Kehben - need to make sure we have greeters/people paying attention to volunteers while they are here
-Kyle - do we need to have someone coordinating outreach both local and away for work parties
-Kehben - education piece, edu. group could get together, discuss and bring proposal to larger group
-Kayleigh - on Thurs. lets come together again for this
BFB POSTER
-Kayleigh - BFB poster, needs to be on someone's radar?
-Kehben - will get to once Kickstarter not on brain
-what was sent needs some changes, Chris might not have been available for those changes
-a few more steps to this process - we may be worrying about what backup plan is for $$ if poster doesn't do the job
-printing BFB posters needs to happen ASAP should have happened in May
-need to talk to Hillary b/c she is our letterpress liaison + she needs to schedule w/Bernie
-May need to be folks here willing to do a little redesign in Photoshop
-Meg, Ethan, Zoe interested
-Kyle - are there folks interested in printing poster?
-Kyle, Zoe, Ethan, Meg, Emma
-Kehben - will be ordering premixed colors
-Kehben - upping posters to letterpresses poster worked really well for us last time, but we don't know if that was b/c it was first time, b/c it was letterpress or b/c of the design
-we got $10,000 from that poster, sold at BFB and at other events
-SO there is risk in letterpressing the posters
-we have committed at least $5,000/$6,000 to bands
-Emma - has there been any movement on beer garden idea?
-Kehben: subject has been broached w/cop and Rhiannon
-are we ready for the headaches that could come with this switch?
Zoe taking notes - did my best to keep up!

Volunteers & Visitors update
Sophie, Josh, Emma and Kaleigh met to chat about volunteer weeks. Kbar and Kyle contributed thoughts later. Please add to this is I have forgotten anything.
Overall points:
-Having designated week(s) will be easier to manage that an ongoing trickle.
-Limiting number of volunteers to around 15 people/ volunteer week.
-Having a sign-up form is good.
-To call out for volunteers or to take people who contact us only?
-Sauna crew suggested the week before the BFB.
-Kbar and Kyle suggested having a volunteer week from July 15 - 22.
-The 5 & 10 is not a one person job. Having volunteers to supplement the contribution of other bees could be an asset.
-There will be times that the 5 & 10 will need "unskilled" help for hauling trash, etc. and times when volunteers with some specific skill sets would be really useful. We don't know yet when those times will be.
-We will need a plan for orientating volunteers and for food.
-We will make some resources for people visiting and volunteering so they are safe/healthy and happy and know where important/interesting stuff is.
-We will make some resources for people visiting and volunteering so they are safe/healthy and happy and know where important/interesting stuff is.
If someone calls and wants to visit...
-Let them know that they are welcome to camp in our backyard for a few nights.
-Explain that we are happy to give them a tour of our spaces and work. Tell them that we are a bunch of new folks here at the hive and we're in the process of launching our latest graphic project and that we don’t know how much energy we'll have to devote to interacting with folks among the current flurry of other tasks we have in front of us.
-Tell them that we ask that visitors cover their food expenses while they are here. Tell them that we share dinners.
-Ask them when they will be arriving.
Write on the whiteboard who is coming and when. Leave space for someone who will be around to sign up to greet them and give them a tour.
If someone calls and wants to volunteer...
Let them know that we will be having one or two separate weeks where we'll ask folks who are interested in visiting/helping to come if they can. We aren't sure quite yet when these weeks will be or what projects will be undertaken. Ask them for their phone number and email. Tell them there will be a follow up message coming soon.
Add their contact info to the volunteer request tracking google doc or give the paper with their info to Kaleigh.
